Why is it called Black Friday?
But ever wondered where Black Friday originated?
The “Black Friday” term first referred to the financial crisis of the gold market in the U.S. on September 24, 1869. Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, Wall Street financiers, connived to buy up as much as they could of the nation’s gold. On that Friday in September, the stock market fell hard. Everyone, from Wall Street tycoons to farmers, went bankrupt.
But it was only in the 1960s that Black Friday got associated with Thanksgiving. The Philadelphia police used it to describe the chaos that happened after Thanksgiving. Throngs of people stormed into the city for the big Saturday Army-Navy football game. The police had to contain the crowd control, traffic, and even shoplifters.
Now, Black Friday refers to the one-day to four-day retail mania. Stores open earlier and sell their products at a much more affordable price.
